Key learning points
- When we know two parts of a ‘First, then, now’ story, we can find the missing part.
Common misconception
Children may add the parts instead of subtracting a part to find the missing amount.
Give plenty of opportunities to act out stories and solve problems with practical objects. Encourage children to think about the size of the missing part in relation to the known parts, i.e. whether it will be larger or smaller than the other parts.
Keywords
First - Before anything else
Then - After something in time.
Add - To find the total, or sum, by combining two or more parts (addends), or to increase an amount by adding another.
Increased - Make something larger / greater (in size or quantity).
